Ciclovía Comes To Auckland

Ciclovia On Quay

Ciclovía on Quay

Saturday, 8th February 2014, 10am – 4pm

I’ve been banging on about this for years, how we desperately need a “Sunday Streets” style event for Auckland. With motorized vehicles bared from the road out come the people… walking, running, cycling, triking, scootering, skateboarding, unicycling etc… having fun in public spaces. Well finally it’s going to happen, and if the weather is kind I can’t see it being anything but a raging success.

Ciclovía originated in Bogotá, Colombia in the mid 70s and has spread all over the globe, particularly North America. San Francisco gets 7kms of streets to play on, I estimate our slice of Quay Street at 600 metres, but it’s a start isn’t it? Let’s get out there in numbers, show the powers-that-be the people want it, and maybe we can go bigger and better next time.

Here’s the official blurb:

Say goodbye to cars and trucks on Quay Street and experience Auckland’s harbour edge like never before.

Ciclovía (si-kli-vi-a) is a Spanish word which symbolises a global initiative to reclaim city streets, for a moment in time, for people on foot, bikes, scooters and skates.

As part of Auckland’s vision to become the world’s most liveable city, Ciclovía on Quay will let you stroll or ride in a car-free space from Britomart through to Silo Park in Wynyard Quarter, while enjoying a variety of activities and entertainment along the way.

There will be street entertainers, family cycle activities including obstacle courses, bike decorating and bike maintenance tutorials, games, face painters and much more! Have your bike checked at the Bike Station, watch a game of bike polo and browse the Britomart and Silo markets. You’ll also be able to participate in hands on, live and static displays at the Volunteer and Emergency Services Open Day.

Pre-plan your travel to Ciclovía on Quay; for full details on public transport services go to AT.co.nz. If you want to cycle, but can’t ride the whole way, don’t forget that you can take your bike on ferries for free.

Get your family and friends together and come and have fun exploring the waterfront!

Ciclovía on Quay is proudly brought to you by Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Waterfront Auckland.
