November Retro Ride

Start-line, 1979 Tour de France.

My apologies if I put anybody crook about Sunday’s ride. When DB’s email described ‘a sedate loop of the city’, I envisaged cruising through ‘central’ Auckland, maybe a detour through the Domain or Viaduct with plenty of time to stop and smell the flowers, you know, tweed-run style. I now realize in ‘Roadie-Speak’ this means circumnavigating greater Auckland at breakneck speed – just swathed in wool, leather and steel instead of the usual Lycra®, Kevlar® and carbon-fibre!

It didn’t matter in the end as the riders naturally split into two groups. The retro-roadies rocketing out east towards Glendowie, caffeinating in Onehunga and eventually returning to civilization back at the ferry building.

The BMX crew hit Tamaki Drive on an old skool beach-hop, the pace a great deal more leisurely, before searching-out a brew of some kind… it may have been coffee. I think everyone had a good time, it was good getting out and stretching the legs on a grey Auckland morning instead of moping around home reading the paper. Thanks to everyone who made the effort, let’s do it again.

Ah, yes. “Casual ride” means so many different things depending on who’s saying it. When I hear casual, I envision what you do, but the roadies don’t. A friend of mine leads one of the local roadie club rides and has a “casual” one she’s invited me to. I’m scared.

Love the BMXers. Funny, I was working on my 1986ish GT Intercepter just today!
