Bike Spotting: Blinded by Bling

November 20, 2011

Just when I think there’s no bike culture on the Shore I stumble upon someone who “gets it” and all is well in my world again.

Riding past Milford Marina today my retinas were permanently damaged by the sun reflecting off this bike, I just had to stop and get a closer look. The Lycra Cowboys have their featherweight plastic-fantastics, the Dirt Monkeys suspended monsters that float on air – but if you want to show some true style and express a bit of individuality it’s BMXs, fixies and singlespeeds in my book!

VERY nice bike, colours suggest he’s a North Shore United footballer?

I am working on my own single speed / fixed bike at the moment – inherited an old Batavus 531, I just need the SS/F wheel set. Will be interesting to see how it goes up and down beach road anyhoo.

Yes a good match, but I think he was an East Coast Bays boy. The bike was actually set-up singlespeed but had a flip/flop hub with a fixed cog on the other side.

I’d love a fixed road bike myself but am running out of garage space and spousal tolerance.
