Ride Auckland’s Iconic Harbour Bridge (Legally)

June 19, 2011

TelstraClear Challenge

Entries open tomorrow for the TelstraClear Challenge, with two of the planned rides crossing the coat-hanger on Sunday 11th December.

If you didn’t protest our right to do that anyway (!) in 2009 this is your chance. They are asking an awful lot of money for the privilege but this kind of event is very popular and I’m sure the spots will fill-up quickly. First in – first 9,000 served.

Bridge Conquered

The “not-so-legal” 2009 crossing.

The Official Blurb:

Auckland now has an iconic cycle event! A unique course which involves riding over the Auckland Harbour Bridge and on the Northern Busway. This event really is a ‘must do’ for any cyclist.
With a ride to suit everyone, from elites to trikes, the TelstraClear Challenge is a celebration of cycle culture in the Super City!
Options include a fantastic 110km course, a 15km Pedallers Challenge and a chance for kids to get out and “bike the busway”. Whatever your age or stage there is something here for you. Get on your bike!

Yep I think they have got the pricing wildly wrong for this event – as do a number of people I have spoken too. In my opinion they also have the timing of the event totally out of place – coming just two weekends after Taupo – THE premier cycle event in NZ.
I’m sure people will enter maybe not the 9000 they want though??

I didn’t mean to sound “too” negative, I’m sure there are many costs involved in running such an event – it just seemed a lot of money to me, I’m not sure I can afford it.

I hope it is a success as the more people that ride over that bridge and appreciate the possibilities of doing it regularly the better.
