Hi Antoine, Thanks for your generosity in putting this site together. I like the wishful thinking of ‘Bikefriendlynorthshore’ – you gotta have a dream!
I see you are a Surly fan. I adore my Surly Long Haul Trucker, which I bought on TradeMe from a woman who rode it in the Middle East and Europe – and since then it has been to Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang.
You might know Jacob from Avanti Cycles in Henderson, who has ridden his fat-tired Surly on epic rides in the Himalayas and Australian deserts.
I like your photos of various spots round the beautiful North Shore.
You might like to contact the Auckland Cycle Touring Association to join some of their Sunday rides round the region.
    Best wishes,
    Cathy

Hello Cathy, lovely to hear from you.

I’m not so sure I like the sound of “wishful thinking” and “dream” but you’re probably not too far from the truth. Even so, I’ve had two comments from Shore people (I’m assuming you’re local) and a couple of emails in the two weeks the blog’s been going without me marketing the idea at all, so I’m encouraged by that, but still realistic about its future.

I tossed-up between the Surly LHT and the Cross-Check I ended up getting. Both are solid, versatile bikes with plenty of personality.

Yes I have met Jakub on a few occasions. We tend to stand-out in a crowd with matching purple snow-bikes!

I would love to ride with the ACTC and have perused their website in the past, but when I’m not working I’m usually looking after my children, so I rarely get time to myself to ride with a group.

Why don’t you email me some photos of you on your bike (or just the bike if shy ;^) and I’ll put them up.
Better yet join the Bike Friendly North Shore photo group on Flickr and upload as many as you like. (see “Gallery” page above)

      Cheers, Antoine

    Hi Antoine
I’m writing a story about getting out and about on the North Shore for Localist. It’s a new directory/guide from NZ Post and will go out to 100,000 households when it’s printed in October.
Just wondering if I could use some of your images for the story? I could mention your website in the copy and provide a link for more info.
    Give me a call: 09 354 1119; 027 5077 2561
    Or I’m at kat.ryan@localist.co.nz
    Thanks
    Kat

    can you help

    • January 13, 2012 10:35 pm

Do you mean Paremoremo Peter? I don’t know of any cycleway out there but there is a mountainbike-park called Sanders Reserve very close to Paremoremo Prison?

I’ve written about that on the “Great Rides” page. (follow link at top of site)

Very grateful for this site Antoine. Sorry I am entering the competition too as the dairy and takeaway are on my regular route [and as a newly reconfigured cyclist I am proud to say that]. I have noticed a large increase in cyclist numbers and so am hoping trails and tracks can only get more numerous. Just spent Easter in Tauranga and was so sorry I haven’t got a bike rack organised yet as there are plenty of cycle friendly routes there, and in the Karangahake Gorge – and saw lots of bikes attached to car racks on the way out of Ak on Good Friday – and we certainly needed something positive to look at while in the slow traffic.
I was enthused to hear of the cycle coop workshop place in Wellington,- programme on Radio NZ National. Maybe it’s something someone could get started in Ak – just need free-ish premises eh? A council grant must be available. Hah we must have dreams.

Lovely to hear from you Angela. I get 500-600 visits per week at the moment but nobody ever says anything!

There is a free (donation) community bike workshop in Auckland, Tumeke Cycle Space. I didn’t realize there was no link on my main page. Fixed that now.

Good to know that, thanks. Went to Echelon in Barry’s Point Rd, very impressed and got a bike rack for the car without having to have a tow bar installed – great solution. We went to Sanders Reserve on Anzac Day – loads of families there – almost too many but people were considerate. Wonderful place and I am telling all other bike enthusiasts and picnickers about it.

Hi, I will email you from work in the morning, but would love to speak to you about some of your photos and comments, for inclusion in the new edition of the Harbourside Walking, Cycling to Explore brochure we are putting together at this time, also the use of them especially those at our Cyclewise track at Onepoto Domain…..they are lovely….. Followed the directions from Rook Pl in Unsworth through to Rosedale Park and sports fields. Great ride apart from a couple of times when we didn’t know which way to turn when the paths hit a road and the bike signs gave out without giving further directions. The exercise stations are a further challenge for those who need extra exercise! Plenty of other bikers about on Saturday and no hassles with sporty car drivers.

That’s good to know Marty, that slimy wood was treacherous in the wet. Thanks for taking the time and I hope you weren’t hurt too bad.

  11. June 21, 2012 8:30 am

Yes, it is good now. Meshed and cleaned. A challenging enough ride for most people especially if you make it al the way to Devonport.

No damage to me the bike, it seemed to happen in slow motion .

Hey Antoine – love the site, thanks man! What are the bars you have on that Avanti in the http://bikefriendlynorthshore.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/the-humble-bike-basket/ post? Any good? Looking to replace the skinny drop bars on my brand new 1986 Giant touring bike…

    • October 5, 2012 2:40 pm

Hi Greg, they are a cheap generic bar from Velo-Ideale in Christchurch. I like them a lot but they are a touch narrow for singlespeeding or off-road riding. Perfect for cruising around town like with an old English 3-speed bar.

  14. October 5, 2012 6:52 pm

Seems like people have taken a break from biking over the wet winter – but I am back into limited amounts now and notice some more people about.

    • October 6, 2012 1:02 am

Yes, I’m noticing more bikes now things are warming (drying?) up. I hope we get an increase in commuting numbers this summer.

  15. October 5, 2012 6:59 pm

Oh and the cheap baskets from K-Mart are very adaptable – but yes it does alter your stability and steering – I figure it’s best to distribute the load around the bike – rear carrier, back pack as well as basket.
